Triple Chocolate Avocado Shake

I used to wear a bow tie at work. It’s true. It’s true. In my senior year of high school, I worked at a restaurant inside a cinema. The job required me to wear a purple apron, a white button-up shirt with visible creases, and a bow tie. Like all managers who are underpaid and on an ego trip, our manager was anal. It was only because of the “discounted” (read: free) desserts that I received that I didn’t rip off the plastic name tag.

Did you hear it? I was able to enjoy unlimited desserts, including my favorite milkshake: hot fudge with peanut butter and banana. Ughughughg. This job was worth every minute.

If I were to drink a hot fudge milkshake with peanut butter and bananas, my stomach would scream for days. Oh, the woes that come with growing up and being responsible for yourself.

Why make a healthier shake? Recently, a reader wrote to me and asked for my version of an avocado chocolate smoothie. I jumped at the opportunity. To begin, I concentrated on the base. I kept it 100% frozen so that it would be thick and creamy – exactly how I like my shakes.

That’s it! The three C’s are frozen banana and avocado. You end up with a luxurious vegan chocolate shake that is actually healthy. There’s an avocado in it!

This shake will not replace the hot fudge and peanut butter banana. It does, however, satisfy my desire for that super creamy, ice-cold shake from the past. It’s made from wholesome ingredients. This is a shake that my body can thrive and even jive with. Cheers!

Ingredients

  • One avocado (ripe, sliced and frozen)
  • Half a large banana (peeled and sliced, then frozen until hard).
  • 1 Tbsp cacao or cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbsp of vegan hot fudge or chocolate sauce
  • 1 cup of chocolate almond milk or other non-dairy milk

Instructions

  • Blend all ingredients until smooth in a blend. Add more agave, stevia, or chocolate sauce to taste.
  • Divide the mixture between two small glasses, or drink it all by yourself.
