Last week, late at night, as John prepared for bed, I was browsing Pinterest on my phone. Sometimes I don’t pin anything on Pinterest at all, but other days I am a maniac and re-pin everything I see. Cute puppies, strange tattoos, 18-layer cakes – you name it. That night, I saw something that caught my attention so much that I decided to make it that morning.
This recipe is based on one that I found and was featured in Babel. If you are on a strictly raw diet, then stick to Kathy’s recipe. For those who are not on a vegan raw diet, you can enjoy the creamy, dreamy chocolate shake that is also healthy and vegan.
It’s been my go-to morning breakfast since I made it for the first time a few weeks ago. It is so delicious. The bananas are only mildly tasted, so even if you don’t like them, give it a try.
Add more cocoa to intensify the chocolate flavor. If you don’t like bananas or can’t eat them, you could substitute all frozen blueberries or strawberries for the same result. Also, I recommend adding flaxseed or spinach to the recipe for extra nutrition. Bottoms up!
Ingredients
- Chop two bananas ripe (frozen)
- 1/3 cup frozen blueberries or strawberries
- Cocoa powder – 2-3 tablespoons
- Salted almond butter, 2 Tbsp
- 1 Tbsp of flaxseed meal, optional
- 1,5-2 cups vanilla almond milk unsweetened (substitute soy or coconut).
- One dash of agave or stevia nectar, depending on the sweetness of the bananas
- 1/4 cup of ice
- One big handful of spinach is optional (not shown here)
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients in a mixer until smooth.
- Add more cocoa powder if you want a shake with more chocolate flavor. Add more agave or stevia if you want it sweeter. Add less ice OR almond milk if you want it thinner.
